Justin has always wanted to race go-karts for as long as I can remember. He was amazed by Dale Earnhardt watching him on TV. He knew about go-karts because of a friend of ours who sold them. Of course, Justin being so small for his age, Mom was too scared to get him into racing. We tried to put him in other sports like T-ball, but he had no interest in that. So we had to break down and buy him a kid-kart on his 8th birthday. All Justin did from Feb.- June was practice every week until we decided to enter him into his first race on June 12th. Well, Justin, my 40 pound little man, won his first race. Justin was hooked. We kept entering him in all the local races, and he kept bringing home a trophy. He thought he was Dale Earnhardt. We tried to enter him into a state race at 103rd but the Hurricanes put a stop to that. Justin was upset that he could not compete for a state title. Six months was all he had in the kid-kart and we had to move him into the cadet-class. My only regret was not having the money or knowledge to travel and enter him into the big events around the region. Justin earned himself a local kid-kart championship, and he his ready to keep going. Justin is now practicing and learning the cadet-kart. He has a long road ahead of him and a lot of practicing to be able to compete with these kids who have been in this class 2-3 years. These kids have modified engines and Justin is still running the stock engine. Justin is also so small that we had to add 70 pounds of lead to his go-kart so he would be in the weight class of 235 lbs (kart & kid). That much weight makes it difficult for him to control the kart like he did the kid-kart. He is having fun trying to get to speed so he can get the faster engine. Justin has been working with Chuck McCue of Arsenal Pro Racing and Bobby Wilson of Ocala Gran Prix. Justin is determined to become a NASCAR driver one day. His pictures and story are hanging on the walls of the Jacksonville Florida Dick's Wings and Hooters restaurants. He also has his first racing gloves and pictures hanging on the wall in Race Rock in Orlando. Justin was on the local news Channel 12 for a story on Summer kids. He also was on an ESPN2 special on Karting and interviewed in a local magazine called "Kids N Sports". Justin will be in the cadet class until he is 12 years old. He does a lot of practicing. He averages 100 laps each day he goes to the track. Justin is a very determined kid to make it in the racing world. Justin lives in Jacksonville, Florida |
